Meet Dr. Underwood

Center for Women's Health GuamWhen it comes to finding an obstetrician and gynecologist, you want a doctor who is both knowledgeable and personable. Quality health care encompasses more than state-of-the-art technology; it requires sensitivity to patient needs, a compassion and understanding for every person as an individual. It is this philosophy that prompted Dr. Teresa Underwood to open her new obstetrics and gynecology private practice on Guam. “One of the goals for opening my practice was to offer personalized care for my patients. I wanted to create an environment that fosters a relationship between me and my patients,” explained Dr. Underwood.

Dr. Underwood was born in 1972 in Vietnam. She left her homeland and arrived on Guam in 1975. She spent most of her childhood in Texas, graduating Valedictorian of Everman High School class of 1991. Her BA in Chemistry was awarded 4 years later from Austin College, a small but prestigious liberal arts school. She attended Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center for her medical doctorate. She completed her ObGyn training in Syracuse, NY at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2003. She has been Board Certified through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2005 and actively updates this status annually. She was in private practice for 11 years before moving to Guam to start the ObGyn Department in a multi-specialty clinic. She was Chairman of the department for more than 3 years before starting up Center for Women’s Health.

She is skilled in the medical and surgical care of the female reproductive system and associated disorders. Her areas of interest include general and high-risk obstetrics, minimally-invasive surgery, pelvic reconstructive surgery, and pediatric and adolescent gynecology. Dr. Underwood stated, “Obstetrics is actually why I became an OBGYN in the first place.  I love the delivery; bringing a life into the world and seeing a family happy and relieved that the baby’s finally here is so special. Typically, pregnancy is a long road with a wonderful outcome. I just think it is the best field in the world.”

She is licensed to practice in Guam, Texas and Washington. She has privileges to provide services at Guam Memorial Hospital (GMH), Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC), and Guam Surgicenter.  Dr. Underwood and her staff welcome women of all ages. From wellness advice to prenatal care to help with menopause, they’re committed to helping women improve their overall health and lifestyle.  “I think that there’s a special bond you can have with your patients, especially being a female physician, and that’s what I really love about being an OB/GYN.  I feel like I’m really doing something for my patients; I’m making a connection,” expressed Dr. Underwood.

Dr. Teresa N. Underwood possesses the special knowledge, skills, professional capability and compassion that distinguishes her as an outstanding physician for women and makes Center For Women’s Health the choice for OB/GYN care on Guam.
